who’s bad

Eating out with my parents is always an adventure, whether they want to take me to their favorite taco joint – Del Taco, or I want to take them to the latest Roy Choi eatery.  This morning, my mom handed me a postcard they just received in the mail, from a new sushi place in West LA called BAD (Best and Delicious) Sushi.  “Let’s go here for lunch.  They have nice pictures on the postcard,” she said, “and we get 30% off!” as she pointed to the coupon on the other side of the glossy card.  While I was steadying my taste buds for a juicy Johnnie’s pastrami sandwich, and definitely not for some coupon-giving sushi bar, I cried uncle trying to keep an open mind that this could be another new experience, BAD or not.

When we walked into the brightly lit, colorful restaurant, there were only two other patrons in the 40-or-so capacity bar.  Mom’s nabeyaki udon, served in a non-traditional 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup, was hearty, chockful of kamaboko, bok choy, and chicken.  Dad’s short rib bento box must have been particularly delicious since he ate EVERYTHING.  But it was my “ceviche” that sealed the deal for me.  A combination of cubed tuna, albacore, salmon, and bass, tossed with jalapeno, avocado, cilantro and green onion, served with housemade tortilla chips was as fresh and delicious as it was colorful.  For dessert (yes, having a baker as a father, it’s a requisite to always order dessert, even with lunch) we split their tempura green tea ice cream, which at first bite was just okay, but proved to be addicting by the second bite and before we knew it, we were members of the clean dessert plate club.

The decor definitely screamed,”Ikea,” but the overall ambiance and service was friendly in this Thaitempura ice cream bad owned and operated eatery.  Their happy hour specials looked pretty  impressive (50% off most of their menu, it seemed) so I suspect they do a booming business between 3:00 and 7:00 PM.  I can’t attest to their sushi rolls, but I will definitely be back to put them to the test,  coupon or no coupon.

Great review. The ceviche sounds delish.
Next time I’m in LA, I’ll have to check ’em out.
