orange you glad I said brownie

I’ve been waiting for  them to announce the categories for the 44th Pillsbury Bake-Off.  Garret had entered it two years ago (it used to be an annual thing, but it got so big, it is now every other year) so he was also anticipating the announcement.   Finally, on January 9th, it came.  And I was excited.  I was somewhat unprepared, though I’ve been looking forward to entering the contest for almost two years.  But then, for reasons lost on the universe, I put off testing recipes.  The deadline is April 20 so I figured I’ve got a few months of trial and error once I got an idea of what I wanted to do.  But I didn’t know what I wanted to do.  I was drawing an epicurious blank.  My culinary muse was failing me.  Up until yesterday.

I have become recently gastro-obsessed with Bi-Rite Creamery’s Sam’s Sundae – a creamy chocolate ice cream, topped with bergamot olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt.  A savory sweet treat, just how I like it.  So I applied those key ingredients, with a slight twist, to a Pillsbury brownie recipe and came up with a delicious, “Orange You Glad I Said Brownie” brownie.

Still may need a tweak or two, but I think I’m on the right track.
