who said pie?

This past Friday, I went with a handful of co-workers to see W. Kamau Bell’s new solo show. Not only is this man a sidesplittingly funny stand-up, he is smart, poignant, and respectful to his mother. He spoke of his first Thanksgiving with his future in-laws, taking a (somewhat) homemade but non-traditional (in a white household) sweet potato pie as his contribution to the pot luck. His pie was shunned by all and relegated to be eaten by only the couple themselves (and one other person). Sitting in the audience, I then realized that most (white) folks have probably never had sweet potato pie (outside of BBQ joints). This was something I grew up having every Thanksgiving (it helps when your dad owns a bakery). So tonight, in order to culturefy my office, I baked a sweet potato pie. sw-potato-pie

An Alton Brown crust recipe (though replaced his lard with my Crisco), basic sweet potato pie custard recipe, and topped with toasted pecan pieces. We’ll see how it goes over.
