2011 has definitely been a year of good eats for me. Hitting two restaurants from my bucket list, Alinea and Tru, were the highlights and the food did not disappoint. Throughout the year, though, there were many surprises. Below is my list of the best of what was on g-fork’s plate this year (and in [...]
d’oh! nuts
Sometimes, my life surprises me. Take for instance, doughnuts. I am a baker’s daughter. I grew up surrounded by amazing, fresh baked goods and confections. My dad’s cookies are still in my dreams – butternut, peanut butter, oatmeal, but most of all he used to make kick-ass chocolate chip cookies. So good, in fact, when [...]

Cold weather is here which means it’s chili season.

bitter/sweet
It’s been said that humans have evolved, been bred, to be predisposed to favor sweets over bitter so we can distinguish the pure from the poison. Babies will always take a banana over a rutabaga, say. Today at lunch, I ordered my usual chashu ramen bowl at my favorite Hapa Ramen at the farmer’s market [...]
this little piggy needs roast beef
I just read about a mobile butcher shop, a pimped out vintage ex-ambulance meat truck, that sells fresh cuts of lamb, beef, chicken and pork. Centrally located parked in Hayes Valley, Avedano’s Meat Wagon is a great idea, particularly for those who don’t want to make the trek to the meat markets at the ferry [...]
